2009 marked the 200th Anniversary of Darwin’s birth in 1809.

The theory of evolution which he proposed has been scientifically tested, refined and developed in the 150 years since the publication of On The Origin of Species. Although the idea caused religious controversy when first published, by the end of his life it was generally accepted.

During the US Presidential Election I was struck by how frequently fundamentalist beliefs about Creation were mentioned in the media. According to a study published in Science, between 1985 and 2005 the number of adult Americans who accept evolution declined from 45% to 40%.

I find it alarming that we appear to be going backwards in our thinking.
