Paper, graphite. Plaited.
90 x 154 x 4.5cm
2017
This piece was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2017. It is a complex three dimensional, three directional plait made of paper rubbed with graphite.
I have always enjoyed watching light moving across a landscape. When the sun is low every ripple in the sand and stone on a hill casts a shadow. By creating this undulating and faceted surface I am drawing with the light that falls on it. Its appearance changes with the movement of the light throughout the day and the viewpoint of the observer. I have further defined the structure by shading it subtly with graphite.
It could represent a landscape on any scale; from mountains, hills and valleys, to the texture of a minutely observed path.
