The Pembrokeshire landscape has been settled for a very long time, and there are ancient fields, some bounded by stone walls and some by hedges. Blackthorn is a common hedging plant, creating a dense barrier, impenetrable by stock or ramblers. The weather is often wild, and the hedges provide shelter for sheep and cattle. The blackthorn in this dish creates an enclosure, providing a place of safety in the centre.
